Ayurveda literally means “science of life”. It is the oldest system of medical health which comes from India. Ayurveda looks at the body as a whole, and it looks at the root cause of a disease before a cure is determined.
Ayurveda teaches us that a disease or imbalance often begins when we don’t live in harmony with ourselves, our nature and our environment.
It takes into consideration what has caused an imbalance, who you are as an individual, and what body-type you are born with. Ayurveda is a complete body-mind healthcare system and continues to be one of the world’s most powerful body-mind healthcare systems.
It’s more than a system of treating diseases, it’s a system that helps people to stay balanced, cure imbalances, and reconnect with inner their body, mind and wellbeing.
YOUR UNIQUE BODY-TYPE
Ayurveda speaks about three body types, also known as doshas. The doshas are who we are, and the body-type we are born with. There are three different body types/doshas:
Governs movement and space in the body. It’s the space/air element. It controls the nervous system and supports the digestive tract. When Vata becomes imbalanced it usually shows as cold hands and feet, digestive problems, restlessness, joint problems, anxiety and worry.
Governs the metabolism. It’s a fire energy and regulates and controls the metabolism. When Pita becomes imbalanced it might suffer from acid reflux, heat, skin problems, anger, aggressiveness, hair loss and inflammation.
Has properties of earth and water. It governs the chest and lung area. When Kapha it out of balance is becomes heavy, moody, and lean towards emotional eating, weight gain, diabetes, allergies, asthma and mucus problems.
There are many more imbalances and specifics linked to the above body types, and you can learn much more about what body type you are here, and what imbalances you are prone to.
Ayurveda is a personal approach to health, food and wellbeing. When you know your personal constitution – your dosha, it allows you to make the right choices in terms of exercise, food, work, and lifestyle routine.
According to Ayurveda sleep is one of the most important cures to longterm health. When we sleep well at night, we allow the body to go through all the natural processes of repairing and rejuvenating itself.
A lack of proper sleep or constant interrupted sleep can lead to Vata imbalance, weaken the immune system and speed up the ageing process. A peaceful sleep means that you’re not using any medicaments or alcohol to get to sleep.
WHEN OUT OF BALANCE
When your body and mind is balanced you live in tune with nature, and have healthy desires. You crave healthy foods, you sleep well, you feel rested, you are in tune with your senses and you feel light and happy on the inside.
When your system is out of balance you crave junk food, sugar and salt in big amounts, you overeat or comfort eat, or you may have no appetite, your mood suddenly changes, you neglect your body, and sleep bad.
If an imbalance has existed in your system for a while, overtime it can become a disorder and it might develop into a mental or physical disease.
