Why You’re Feeling Tired in Spring — and What to Do About It
Spring is here — longer days, more sunlight, and the promise of renewed energy. But what if you’re still feeling tired in spring instead of refreshed? There is a reason to why you feel fatigued.
In holistic wellness and Ayurveda, spring is actually a major time of internal change — and if your habits don’t shift with the season, you might feel sluggish, foggy, or even get sick.
Why Spring Can Leave You Feeling Low on Energy
Your body is trying to detox — but it’s struggling
During winter, we naturally slow down. Heavier foods, more sleep, and less movement build up residue in the body.
As spring arrives, your body tries to cleanse. But if digestion is slow or you have a large accumulation of heavy energy in the body from eating heavier foods or more processed foods during the colder months that internal cleansing process that your body is going through in spring can make you feel tired.
Kapha season brings heaviness
In Ayurveda, spring is ruled by kapha dosha — cool, damp, and heavy.
If kapha builds up too much, it leads to:
- Low energy
- Congestion
- Sluggish digestion
- Spring cold
- A feeling of heaviness in the body and mind
You’re not syncing with the new rhythm
Your energy, digestion, and hormones all respond to light and warmth.
When you stay stuck in winter habits — Emotional eating, low movement, skipping meals, snacking frequently, late sleep — your body resists the seasonal shift.
Sleep cycles are disrupted
Sunrise is earlier and evenings are longer. That affects your natural sleep-wake rhythm.
Late nights, screen time, or lack of early morning light can leave your hormones confused — and your body tired.
How to Stop Feeling Tired in Spring — Simple Daily Shifts
Eat lighter, especially at night
- Focus on warm, cooked vegetables
- Nourishing stir-fries (if you like fish or chicken you can combine that with the veggies)
- Add bitter greens like arugula/ruccula and rocket or spinach
- Use spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric to support digestion if you feel bloated or heavy
Boost circulation with dry brushing or massage
Dry brushing before a shower helps remove stagnation.
You can also try self-massage with almond oil (or warm sesame oil if you feel cold) to calm the nervous system and activate lymph flow.
Get outside in the morning
Just 10–15 minutes of early light resets your circadian rhythm.
It boosts energy and supports deeper sleep later on. No time? Then 5-7 min light yoga stretches in your bedroom is helpful too.
